CATHERINE ISSERT // 50 ANS DE LA GALERIE : Exposition collective

Après avoir travaillé chez Jean Fournier et à la galerie Maeght au début des années 1970, Catherine Issert ouvre sa galerie à Saint-Paul de Vence. Elle y défend une audace esthétique qui lui confère un rôle de pionnière et de témoin des bouleversements de l’histoire de l’art au 20^ème siècle. Loin de s’enfermer dans une spécialité ou de céder aux modes, elle a tenu une « ligne », cohérente et diversifiée, en soutenant des artistes de Fluxus, de Supports/Surfaces, de l’art conceptuel, ou encore du Land art, de la Figuration libre et de l’Arte Povera. 

Raconter Catherine Issert, c’est parcourir cinquante ans de créations artistiques et de propositions curatoriales en France (Claude Viallat, Gérard Traquandi, Cécile Bart, Jean Charles Blais, François Morellet, Jean-Michel Alberola). Indissociable de sa situation géographique – un village du Sud de la France fréquenté par de nombreux artistes de la modernité –, la galerie Catherine Issert n’a cessé de s’ouvrir à la scène internationale (John M Armleder, Olivier Mosset, Christo, Lars Frederikson, Erik Dietman, Pier Paolo Calzolari, Adrian Schiess, Minjung Kim, Thomas Müller). 

Edité par Bernard Chauveau, le livre dessine un espace vivant, évoluant au fil des ans et des interventions artistiques, témoignant autant de la fidélité de la galeriste que de l’effervescence d’une entreprise qui est demeurée viable financièrement bien qu’à l’écart de Paris. 

Ce fort ancrage régional, nourri par des liens privilégiés avec la Villa Arson et les institutions muséales, fait partie intégrante de l’identité de la galerie sans pour autant l’empêcher de rendre compte de la multiplicité d’une créativité contemporaine mondialisée.

Richement illustré de plus de 300 images, l’ouvrage est conçu comme un objet à lire, regarder et toucher. Ses partis-pris graphiques donnent immédiatement à voir le « goût » Issert, marqué simultanément par un attachement à la rigueur de l’art minimaliste et une absence d’esprit de sérieux. Recueil d’archives, de souvenirs et de reproductions d’œuvres d’art, il invite les lecteurs à déambuler dans la galerie autant que dans son histoire en suivant la chronologie des expositions (plus de 450) organisées par Catherine Issert. Des contributions de plusieurs personnalités du monde de l’art (Jean de Loisy, Jennifer Flay, Bernard Marcadé, Jean-Louis Prat, Maurice Fréchuret, Dominique Païni) et des textes des artistes de la galerie viennent éclairer son rôle dans l’histoire de l’art français tout en témoignant d’un destin exceptionnel : celui d’une femme ayant garanti la continuité et l’indépendance de son activité pendant cinquante ans en province.

After working for Jean Fournier and the Galerie Maeght in the early 1970's, Catherine Issert opened her art-gallery in Saint-Paul de Vence. Here she defended esthetic audacity which won her with the role of a pioneer and a witness to the upheavals in the history of 20th-century art. Far from confining herself to a single speciality or conceding to trends, she pursued her own path, coherent and diverse, by supporting artists in Fluxus, Supports/Surfaces, Conceptual Art, Land Art, Free Figuration and Arte Povera.
